Coversure Hull Turns 20!

Coversure Hull Turns 20!

January 2026 marks a landmark anniversary for Coversure Hull.  It’s been twenty years since Andy Price Dip. CII opened Coversure Hull’s doors.  Since then, Coversure Hull has not only become the region’s leading provider of landlord, business and fleet insurance, but Andy has also opened two more offices, Coversure Peterborough and Coversure North Lincs.  To mark the occasion, we asked Andy about his journey to date and his plans.

Congratulations, Andy, twenty years in business, you must be very proud.

Yeah, it’s amazing.  I can’t believe it’s been twenty years. It seems like only yesterday I was doing my induction training at head office.  Yet here I am, with three great offices and three amazing teams.

Did you always want to work in insurance?

No, I trained as an engineer.  I became an insurance broker as I was looking for a new challenge, and Hull didn’t have a good commercial insurance broker.

In twenty years, things must have changed beyond all recognition.

The world’s a very different place.  When I started, there were a few big-name insurance brokers on the high street; now they’re as rare as hen’s dentists.  The few that have survived have moved to an online-only service, which I think is a real shame.

Have you been tempted to go online-only?

No.  During the pandemic, we didn’t have much choice, but I started the business as I wanted to give people the chance to speak to an independent expert face-to-face.  While we now do most of our business on the phone and the majority of our new insurance quotes come from online, the offices are still important.  Insurance isn’t, or shouldn’t be, a one-size-fits-all service.  Every business owner, landlord, and fleet insurance customer’s needs are different.  Being able to discuss their requirements with them is key to getting the right cover at the right price.

Do you think having a high street office has helped you grow?

Definitely.  We get a lot of walk-ins, and most of them are amazed that they can still get a face-to-face insurance service.  I’ve got customers who’ve been with me from the off, and since we started gathering feefo reviews in 2020, we’ve had nothing but positive feedback on the quality of our service.

Has the insurance broking changed much over the years?

Like every other industry, technology has changed everything.  When we opened Coversure Hull, so much business was still conducted using paper and the phone.  These days it’s mainly digital.  I’m a huge fan of technology, and I’ve invested heavily in digital marketing.  I’m now looking at what AI can do for us.  That said, I don’t think there’s any substitute for the personal touch.  If the tech can help me get clients cheaper insurance quotes and cover more quickly, then great.  I won’t let it become the driver of the business, though.  We’re all about personal service.

Customers’ needs must have changed a lot in 20 years.  What have been the biggest changes you’ve seen?

In 2006, if you’d been asked for a fleet insurance quote for electric vehicles, you’d have assumed they needed it for milk floats.   Today, most of our fleet clients have at least some electric vehicles.  We’re even getting plant and HGV fleet insurance clients asking about electric vehicle cover.   Another big development has been the need for things like cyber insurance.  This didn’t exist back then, but given that over 50% of SMEs are hit by cyber-attacks every year, it’s something every business now needs.

You have three offices; do they have their specialisms?

First and foremost, we’re a local insurance broker, and we serve the needs of our communities. We’re a commercial insurance broker, and so most of our clients come to us for things like business, fleet, and liability insurance.  Each office has its specialisms.  In Hull, we do a lot of fleet and HGV insurance thanks to the port.  In North Lincs, we write a lot of plant and hired-in plant insurance, and in Peterborough, we have a lot of commercial landlord insurance customers.  Thanks to being part of Coversure, we can find cover for everything from car insurance to professional indemnity insurance.

You opened Coversure Peterborough in 2025.  Would you consider opening another office in the future?

Yes, but not yet.  Establishing a new office takes time, and I need to ensure we can offer the standard of service that our customers deserve.  It’s not about pins on a map for me.  If an opportunity came up, I’d consider it.  I’ve always fancied having an office in France, but that may be because of the fishing!

If someone were considering opening a Coversure office, what advice would you give them?

Put your customers first, work hard, invest in technology, and engage in extensive networking.  The internet’s an amazing tool, but it’s depersonalised insurance to a worrying degree.  I’ve built my business on personal relationships, and in an AI world, that’s the future.

Well done, Andy.  Here’s to another twenty years…?
